Weird Song Intros?

Got another one, one that has always thrown me until I count it, and I can never make it sound like Tony.

Proto-Cosmos. Wierd tune...wierd.

Not sure if Benrand already got this one, but Soundgarden "Dusty" off of "Down on the Upside." They play with meter on this but the intro seems like very little indication of where "1" is. I think the intro is in 5 then goes into 4/4? I often miss it.

"Murder By Numbers" and "Spirits" by the Police are great suggestions--even when I know where one is intellectually, it almost always tricks me.

Kept trying to think of a Living Colour/Calhoun track that does this as Will is notable for messing with 1. But he usually doesn't formally set up a counter-feel like this in the intro, but rather plays some odd thing and you just have to know where "1" is (i.e. "Mind your own business" or "Time's Up").

Carter Beauford also tends to set up really counter-intuitive grooves that work, but usually Dave Matthews sets them up with a firm sense of 1, like that crazy groove in "You Never Know" off of "Busted Stuff." Perhaps the opening fill for "Grey Streets" off that same CD would work, as the intro fill suggests 1 is in a different place that it is.

Good ones. I'll have to check some of these out.

Proto Cosmos is a bar of [hits in-] 2/4 [or 4/8], followed by 2 bars of 3/4 [aka 6/4], so that the whole phrase is actually akin to an "8/4."

The hits [in 16ths] are on the 1, + of 1, e of 2 [the dr fills then start on the 1 of the following 3/4 bar].
Tony played some great fills in that one.

Gary awa Chad do it great justice each time in their own ways AW [both the subsequent studio recordings, AH's in-studio-vid, & live].

Similar side note: We had the fortunate opportunity in the band i was in ATT, at a city festival/block party in the late 90s, to share the stage w the Derek Trucks Band [gtrst son of drummer Butch], & they did a fine cover version of this tune AW. [A shout of thx also goes out again to Yonrico for letting me use his sn stand AW].

The DTB is a fine rock/blues band also w plenty of splashes of latin, funk & jazz spices, check 'em live if you can. It was cool that they chose to cover PC at a rock-blues gig. DT may not be quite your Allan, FG, ScottH, or Sco, but his band as a whole live is very cool [haven't heard the studio recordings].

I saw them again yrs later opening for Eric Johnson, & they were even better as a collective unit, naturally. [img]cool.gif[/img]

I mentioned Meshuggah's "Future Breed Machine" earlier...also, "the Exquisite Machine." They may not nec start somewhere other than 1 if memory [occasionally [img]wink.gif[/img] ] serves me, but the accents might scwue with your average perception of the bar[s]line[s].
